Dear Supporter, It’s hard to believe, but there are efforts to try to kill Senate Bill 271. New Mexico’s horses, donkeys, and mules—who are homeless or abused and in need of rescue—need you to take action today. Imagine this unsettling scenario: A facility has turned into a terrible hoarding situation. Animal cruelty charges are filed. Thirteen horses, found starving but alive, are saved and held during the trial. But then comes the really bad news… After the facility owner is convicted, state law currently gives the judge only two options for those horses: (1) death, or (2) sale at auction to the highest bidder—where a ‘kill buyer’ will try to buy them up to resell to a horse slaughterhouse. This scenario still happens right here in New Mexico. In fact, multiple cases like it happened last year. And to save those horses one more time, equine rescue organizations are forced to bid hundreds of dollars per animal, with no guarantees that it will be enough to outbid the kill buyers. That is why Animal Protection Voters and equine rescues across the state have fought for Senate Bill 271—which passed the State Legislature but still needs the Governor’s signature to become law. Senate Bill 271 will change state law so that all domestic horses, donkeys & mules who are found homeless or in a cruelty case just like the one described above can first be saved by equine rescues before having their lives put at risk by being sent to auction. |
