U.S. Rep. Steve King's (R-Iowa) "Protect Interstate Commerce Act" (HR 4879) was included as an amendment to the House Agriculture Committee's 2018 Farm Bill. The King amendment is controversial, dangerous, and a threat to countless state and local laws regarding food safety, animal welfare and more.
The full U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote on the 2018 Farm Bill at any moment! Please act right away by contacting your Representative in Congress.
In a nutshell, the King amendment would require that all states allow the sale of "any agricultural product" if it's not prohibited under federal law or if it's allowed by any other state in the country. This provision would prevent states from enforcing their own laws regarding the production of "agricultural products" — including anything from the conditions that farmed cows and pigs are kept in, to bans on dog and cat meat, to regulations on contamination, additives, antibiotics, and labeling, to even child labor laws.
